The Categories Underneath July's Retail Pullback
Month-over-month change by category, July 2026 vs. June 2026.
Headline retail sales fell 0.6% — the first monthly decline in nine months. The category breakdown shows where that came from.
Category rose, month-over-month
Category fell, month-over-month

Motor vehicle sales fell 1.8% and online sales fell 2.2%, the two steepest declines of the month. Gasoline stations fell 0.9% as prices eased. Clothing, health and personal care, food service, and building materials all posted modest gains — not a uniform pullback. The headline number and the category breakdown tell the same basic story two different ways: spending didn't collapse evenly, it concentrated its weakness in a handful of categories large enough to pull the total negative.

U.S. Census Bureau, Advance Monthly Retail Trade Survey (MARTS), July 2026, released August 14, 2026. All figures are month-over-month percent change, seasonally adjusted, not adjusted for price changes. Headline retail and food services sales: −0.6% (±0.4 percentage points), the first monthly decline in nine months. Figures shown are as published by the Census Bureau; no derived or estimated adjustments applied.
