In July, institutional cash fell to 3.6% — BofA's lowest reading since February and, on its own scale, the sixth-lowest in the survey's history.
During the same week Census data showed retail sales falling for the first time in nine months, BofA's survey found fund managers holding their most confident cash position in five months — a genuine mismatch between the two, not just a coincidence of timing.
Institutional cash levels: BofA Global Fund Manager Survey, May 2026 (200 managers, $517B AUM), June 2026, and July 2026 (181 managers, $484B AUM; survey conducted July 2–9, 2026). BofA Cash Rule: below 4.0% = contrarian sell signal. July's 3.6% reading is the lowest since February 2026 and one of 16 instances of a sub-3.6% reading since 2002. · Retail sales month-over-month: U.S. Census Bureau, Advance Monthly Retail Trade Survey (MARTS), May 2026 (released June 17, 2026), June 2026 (released July 16, 2026), and July 2026 (released August 14, 2026, CB26-XX). July's −0.6% decline was the first monthly drop in nine months.
